Making Global Goals Local Business Middle-East

Organized by Global Compact Network Lebanon (GCNL), the Making Global Goals Local Business (MGGLB) Middle East forum brought together regional and global leaders from business, civil society, government, and Global Compact Local Networks in the Middle East to catalyze a collective action affecting the Ten Principles of UN Global Compact and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Making Global Goals Local Business Middle East was hosted in the Grand Serail under the patronage and in the presence of H.E President of the council of ministers Saad Hariri and included the following key-note speakers: CEO & Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Ms. Lise Kingo, President of the Global Compact Network Lebanon and Member of Parliament Dr. Dima Jamali, UN Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Philippe Lazzarini, and H.E Minister of Environment Fadi Jreissati among other esteemed guests.

His excellency and the other keynote speakers addressed an audience of more than 800 attendees emphasizing on the importance of advancing Agenda 2030 and achieving the targets of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals via serious work and collaboration between private sector, public sector, academia and NGOs.  Lise Kingo in her first visit to Lebanon expressed her appreciation of the great work of the local Network presided by Jamali and ended her inspiring statement by quoting Khalil Gibran, the great poet and artist, “Progress lies not in enhancing what is but in advancing toward what will be.”

The MGGLB Forum included several panel discussions which tackled different aspects pertaining to sustainable development and achieving the UN 2030 Agenda. The panels covered the following themes to ensure an inclusive understanding of sustainable progress in Lebanon: The National Poverty Target Plan by GCNL’s SDG Council, Partnerships between the Government, Businesses, and International Agencies, Ambassadors’ interventions regarding Sustainability, Fireside Chat between Global Compact Network Lebanon and Global Compact Network Turkey, and the Youth’s role in advancing the SDGs.

The event introduced a Zero Plastic campaign, an initiative on gender equality, a campaign on poverty by GCNL’s SDG Council, honored the Milestone Award Winners, and released the newly published book Zooming on SDG Trends in Lebanon.
