Sustainable Minds Competition Closing Ceremony

Our goal today is to mobilize our youth, YOU, to think with us about solutions to global challenges” – Dr. Dima Jamali, President of Global Compact Network Lebanon.

 On Wednesday April 17, around 250 students gathered in Charles Hostler Auditorium, American University of Beirut, impatiently awaiting for the results of the Sustainable Minds competition organized by Global Compact Network Lebanon in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. The students coming from various areas in Lebanon were even more excited with the presence of key figures: TV personality & journalist Mr. Neshan Der Haroutiounian, Olympic Trap Shooter Ms. Ray Bassil and Lebanese Basketball Champion & founder of Champs Mr. Fadi Khatib.

The ceremony started with kind words of appreciation from Ms. Sarah Issa, National Network Coordinator of GCNL, who applauded all the 150 teams that took part in the competition and submitted videos presenting a solution to various problems in Lebanon correlated with one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. GCNL then showcased a video that gave a summary of the competition, the SDGs tackled and glimpses of some of the videos of students.

MP Dr. Dima Jamali, President of GCNL, took the stage to talk about GCNL and its mission in depth.  Dr. Jamali talked about the importance of Global Compact’s mission around the globe and particularly in Lebanon, highlighting the role of the youth in joining the discussion around the global challenges of poverty, gender inequality, hunger, environment and many more related to the 17 SDGs. She expressed her appreciation towards the students and their hard work to making that first step in finding solutions to basic problems in Lebanon.

Dr. Fadi Yarak, Education from the Ministry of Education & Higher Education, talked to the students about the importance of this competition & sustainability in their lives. He mentioned how all social initiatives start with an idea and every idea and action towards the well being of the society is a great example of civic engagement.

Ms. Dina Harake, Executive Director of GCNL, introduced the inspirational speakers Mr. Neshan Der Haroutiounian, Ms. Ray Bassil and lastly Mr. Fadi Khatib. She asked each a question regarding what inspires them and what has been the most important key to their success.

Mr. Fadi Khatib started by saying how important sports and athleticism is and should be to everyone’s life.

Mr. Neshan Der Haroutiounian talked about the importance of passion and motivation is one’s life and their necessity for success.

Ms. Ray Bassil  talked about a person’s everyday passion in life and the importance of breaking barriers in a woman’s world.

Ms. Sarah Issa acknowledge the Jury Members who were representatives from Blom Bank, Holdal, Fattal, NEEDs, MEHE, Makhzoumi Foundation and TeachforLebanon.

The three top videos were displayed afterwhich Ms. Issa announced the top three winners; The third place went to La Cime school who won a drone, Second place went to Ghobeiry Public Secondary School for Girls who won an E-beam projector and the first place went to AGBU Schools who won an online course training from NEEDs. The jury and GCNL’s Board of Director’s members congratulated the students and distributed their awards. All the students in the top three teams received Eastpak bags from Fattal, gift vouchers from Holdal & certificates of appreciation.
